Dental crowns FAQ
What are dental crowns?
Dental crowns are used to cap teeth and add a protective and cosmetically enhancing surface to tooth enamel. Dental crowns are a method of repairing cracked, damaged teeth and preventing further tooth decay.
What is the procedure for dental crowns?
Dental crowns are custom made for each tooth. A mould of teeth will be taken and this impression will be used by a dental laboratory to make the crown so that it fits perfectly over the surface of teeth. The finished dental crowns are bonded to teeth using a dental adhesive that is sealed using laser. The procedure for dental crowns is slightly different if the crown is being attached to a dental implant.
What material are dental crowns made from?
Dental crowns can be made from metal, gold, porcelain or ceramic. The type of dental crown suitable for each patient will depend on the restorative treatment needed and the functionality of the tooth.
Are dental crowns painful?
The procedure to attach dental crowns is not painful and most patients will experience no discomfort. Some patients may experience sensitivity to hot and cold while the temporary crown is attached but this should pass after the permanent dental crown has been bonded to teeth.
How long do dental crowns last?
Dental crowns are stronger than natural tooth enamel but are still able to break and chip. Crowns made from metal and gold are very strong and will last for at least 5 years if there is no injury. Porcelain crowns used at the front of the mouth are less resilient and are easier to chip than all ceramic crowns. Ceramic crowns will not stain and if they are not broken or chipped, will last for as long as natural teeth.
How much do dental crowns cost?
Dental crown costs are variable depending on the material used to make the crown, the position in the mouth of the crown and the amount of reconstructive treatment necessary to prepare the tooth for the crown. A dental clinic will be able to explain the type of dental crown that is suitable for you and the cost of the crown.
