Dental Hygiene
Protecting the health of your teeth and gums is vital to maintaining the overall health of your body. Looking after your dental hygiene is a combination of thorough dental care at home and regular dental appointments with a dentist and dental hygienist. Neglecting oral hygiene can lead to bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease.
Oral hygiene at home
Brushing your teeth twice a day is the easiest way to keep your teeth healthy. Brushing your teeth not only keeps your breath smelling fresh but removes plaque build up that can lead to tooth decay.
Regular dental flossing keeps the gaps in-between teeth and gums free of bacteria and prevents gum disease.
Brushing teeth twice a day will keep teeth clean, however dentists recommend a twice year visit to a dental hygienist for a deep root scale and polish to remove any ingrained stains, plaque and bacteria to keep your mouth healthy and your teeth white.
Bad breath (Halitosis)
The main symptom of poor oral hygiene is bad breath. Bad breath is caused by a build up of bacteria in the mouth and gums. In cases of halitosis, severe bad breath, the cause is likely to be gum disease or tooth decay. Using a tongue scraper regularly will remove bacteria from the tongue that can build up and cause bad breath.
Deep root scale and polish
Dental hygienists work alongside dentists to keep your teeth and gums healthy. It is recommended that every adult has a deep root scale and polish annually to thoroughly remove any bacteria or plaque that can damage the health of your mouth. A deep-root scale and polish removes plaque and tartar from inside gum pockets and from the outside of teeth. The procedure uses dental instruments to scrape away the deposits without harming tooth enamel or damaging the gums.
